The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has said that the proposal of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, for peace is not serious.

Putin said on Friday that Ukraine must withdraw troops from annexed areas and give up ambitions for NATO membership if it wants a ceasefire.

The German chancellor said that Putin made the statement with the intention of distracting attention from the summit in Switzerland.

"Everyone knows that this proposal was not seriously thought through, but it had something to do with the peace conference in Switzerland," he said, The Guardian reported.

Dozens of world leaders gathered in Switzerland on Saturday to try to find a way to end the more than two-year war in Ukraine.
