Russia has vowed to "intensify" attacks on Kiev, while accusing Ukraine on Sunday of trying to undermine Russian parliamentary elections, after Ukraine launched a wave of drones towards the Moscow region on the final day of voting, killing at least two people.
"In response to the Kiev regime's attacks on civilian targets inside Russia, the Russian military will continue and intensify its high-precision strikes against military targets in Kiev," the Russian Defense Ministry said.
This was the largest attack on Moscow since the Kremlin launched its offensive in Ukraine in 2022 and involved around 1.600 drones, 450 of which were aimed directly at the capital, said Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
The images showed a large hole in a multi-story residential building on the outskirts of Moscow. Another image showed black smoke billowing from what appeared to be an oil refinery.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised Ukraine's attacks, saying their long-range responses had a very significant impact on the Moscow region.
The Ukrainian president has said that among the weapons used in the attack was the "Pelican", initially thought to be a short-range ballistic missile, but which sources later identified as a winged drone.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine had used its domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles to strike Moscow. The long-range weapon has previously been used against targets deep inside Russian territory.
