US Central Command said it was responding to an unprovoked Iranian attack.
Centcom said several missiles were launched by Iranian forces, as well as drones and small boats, while the US warships USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta and USS Mason were transiting international waters. It said no US assets were hit.
"US Central Command has eliminated the threats that were coming and has targeted Iranian military infrastructure responsible for attacks on US forces, including missile and drone launch sites," Centcom said.
Centcom has said it does not want escalation, but will remain in position and ready to protect American forces.
And a senior Iranian commander has accused the US of violating the ceasefire. He said US forces had targeted an Iranian oil tanker that was passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
He said there were also attacks on Qeshm Island, as well as Bandar Kharmir and Sirik.

He said Iranian armed forces responded by striking American warships, causing significant damage.
Explosions reported in Iran
Iran's state broadcaster has reported new explosions in the Strait of Hormuz, which it described as an "exchange of fire" between Iranian armed forces and the "enemy."
An Israeli source told the BBC that there was no Israeli involvement in the reported attacks.
