The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeir, arrived on Tuesday in Kiev, on his first visit to Ukraine since the war started there on February 24.
Steinmeier stated that the visit was important for him in this period of the war.
"It was important for me to bring the message of solidarity to Ukraine at this stage of air strikes with drones and missiles," the German president told the DPA news agency.
The German president, whose position is largely ceremonial, reached Ukraine on his third attempt.
In April, he was planning to visit the country with his Polish and Baltic counterparts, but said his presence was "apparently not wanted in Kiev".
Steinmeier has been criticized in Ukraine for "coziness with Russia" during his time as Germany's foreign minister.
