Greek police have destroyed more than 8 illegally grown cannabis plants on a corn farm in central Greece, one of the largest quantities of cannabis plants found in the country.

Authorities uprooted about 1 plants, police officials said Friday, and destroyed another 300 plants, Reuters reports.

The 44-year-old farm owner was arrested on charges related to the illegal cultivation of cannabis and drug trafficking as part of a criminal group, one of the officials said.

The authorities estimated, based on the number of plants, that the group intended to make an illegal profit of 15 million euros.

Greece legalized cannabis for medical use in 2017 and lifted the ban on its cultivation and production a year later. But the possession, production and sale of cannabis for recreational purposes remains illegal.
