Pirates hijack a German ship

Three Russians are among five crew members of a cargo ship that was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Cameroon, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

On August 16, the German shipping company MC-Schiffahrt said that pirates attacked one of their ships while it was docked in Douala, Cameroon.

The German company announced that it has created an emergency team and is working "with all relevant authorities" in order to free the crew members.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that they are working with the authorities in Cameroon and with the owners of the ship "to facilitate the release of the Russian citizens".

The nationalities of the other two crew members of the hijacked ship have not been made public.

Ship hijackings by pirates demanding monetary compensation are common off the coast of West Africa.
