Sweden's center-left opposition parties won 176 seats in Sunday's parliamentary elections, while the right-wing ruling bloc secured 173 seats, the country's election authority said on Thursday after vote counting was completed.
The election result paves the way for a change of government, with Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson expected to return to the post of prime minister after four years in opposition.
All votes for the 349-seat parliament have now been counted, although the result remains to be officially certified in the coming days.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, from the right-wing Moderate Party, has not yet commented on the final result.
Kristersson had promised that if he won the election, he would include the far right in his new government.
This came shortly after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won elections in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt two weeks ago.
