Preliminary investigations into the turbulence that struck the Singapore Airlines flight last Tuesday show that the plane fell about 55 meters in 4.6 seconds, writes the BBC on Wednesday.
A British passenger died and dozens were injured when a London-Singapore flight encountered turbulence over Burma and had to make an emergency landing in Thailand.
According to the report by Singaporean investigators, the rapid changes in gravitational force (G) caused the fall from height and the injured were mainly those who were not wearing seat belts.
Singapore Airlines has said it is cooperating with investigators and supporting passengers and crew, including medical and hospital expenses.
Preliminary findings by the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) said the flight operated normally until it flew over an area of "developing convective activity" as it passed over southern Burma at an altitude of 11.300 metres.
"Rapid changes in gravitational force lasting 4.6 seconds resulted in a height drop of 54 meters. This sequence caused injuries to the crew and passengers. After the pilots were informed that there were injured passengers, the decision was made to make an emergency landing in Bangkok," the report states.

According to the report, the plane did not encounter any other problems after passing through the turbulence.
