Pope Francis will undergo abdominal surgery on Wednesday afternoon at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, the BBC writes.
He is expected to stay in hospital for "several days" to recover from hernia surgery, the Vatican said.
The 86-year-old has faced a number of health problems in recent years and uses a wheelchair due to an ongoing knee problem.
But while his predecessor Benedict XVI resigned in 2013, the Pope has dismissed the possibility of leaving the post.
"You don't rule the church with your knees, but with your head," he is said to have told an aide last year.
Earlier, the Pope spent five days in hospital in March to treat a lung infection, the same month that marked the 10th anniversary of his pontificate.
