Health care facilities are becoming targets of war, the World Health Organization warned on Wednesday, the BBC reports.
WHO has verified 43 attacks on hospitals and health facilities in Ukraine and 46 elsewhere in the world in other conflicts – the highest rate of attacks on health facilities, which are illegal under international law.
The executive director of the WHO's health emergencies program, Mike Ryan, has said that "unacceptable" attacks on health facilities are "becoming part of the strategy and tactics of war".
"The health system in Ukraine is shaky, it is doing extremely well, but it must be supported, strengthened, it must be given the basic tools to save lives", he said.
Ryan added that it is an attack on "the most basic human rights" and that it is more than destroying buildings - "this is about destroying hope".
As in Ukraine, the WHO has also verified attacks in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya, Nigeria, Palestine, Sudan and Syria.
