The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global emergency on Wednesday, with cases confirmed in children and adults in dozens of countries.
Earlier this week, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared the monkeypox outbreak a health emergency, with more than 500 dead, while calling for international help in stopping the spread of the virus.
"This is something that should concern us all... the potential for further spread within and outside of Africa is very worrying," said WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
In 2022, the WHO declared monkeypox a global emergency after it spread to more than 70 countries where cases of the virus, which mainly affects gay and bisexual men, had not previously been reported.
Unlike earlier outbreaks of monkeypox, where signs appeared on the chest, hands and feet, now the new form of the virus causes mild symptoms and signs appear on the genitals.
