An easily transmissible variant of the coronavirus that was first discovered in the United Kingdom has now spread rapidly in the United States, with the number of cases doubling every 10 days, according to a new study.
The report released Monday by MedRxiv predicted that the British variant, officially known as B.1.1.7, could become the most dominant variant of COVID-19 in the US by next month, the Independent reports.
This variant has been present since November within the US territory, according to the group, led by scientists at the Scripps Research Institute.
The researchers estimated that the new variant was 35 to 40 percent more transmissible than any other strain that had previously appeared in the US.
