A Russian woman is sentenced to prison after writing "No war" on the ballot

A woman in Russia was sentenced to 8 days in prison on Wednesday after writing "No to war" on her ballot, TheGuardian reported.

The Russian court decided that Alexandra Chiryatyeva should be fined 433 dollars, on the grounds that she is guilty "of hooliganism and discrediting the Russian armed forces".

"Chiryatyeva took a ballot paper and wrote 'no war' in red marker on the back before putting it in the ballot box. In this way, Chiryatyeva damaged state property and discredited the Russian armed forces," the court's decision reads.

The election process in Russia that lasted three days was considered illegal by the opposition and Western countries.

President Vladimir Putin won over 87 percent of the vote.
