Netanyahu says Hamas leader has been eliminated

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that Israel has eliminated Hamas chief Mohammad Sinwar, one of the most wanted men, who was also the younger brother of the group's slain leader, Yahya Sinwar.

Mohammad Sinwar was the target of an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza earlier this month, with Netanyahu announcing on May 21 that he was likely killed, Reuters reported.

"We eliminated Mohammad Deif, (Ismail) Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammad Sinwar," Netanyahu said, speaking before the Israeli parliament. 

"In the last two days, we are at a turning point to finally defeat Hamas," he declared, adding that Israel is also taking control of "food distribution," a reference to the new aid distribution system in Gaza, controlled by a group backed by the United States.

Hamas has not yet confirmed Sinwar's death.

Sinwari had risen to the highest ranks of the Palestinian militant group last year after Israel killed his brother.

While his brother Yahya Sinwar was considered the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which began the now 20-month-old war, and was then appointed as the group's new leader after the Israeli Army killed his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran.
