A woman in Florida, United States of America, who had received a dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus when she was pregnant, has given birth to the first baby with antibodies against COVID-19, the medical team has announced.
Doctors Paul Gilbert and Chad Rudnick have announced that the woman received the first "Moderna" vaccine in January, at 36 weeks of pregnancy.
The woman gave birth to a daughter three weeks later. She was in good health, and after the first tests it was noticed that she had antibodies.
"There is a potential for protection and reduction of the risk of infection from COVID-19 through maternal vaccination," said the doctors' announcement published in a scientific journal, writes "The Guardian".
"For your information, this is the first time in the world that a baby born with antibodies after a vaccination has been reported," said Gilbert. "We tested the baby's umbilical cord to see if the mother's antibodies were passed on to the baby, which we have seen happen with pregnancies."
In the announcement, doctors called for more research to determine whether babies are protected by their mothers' antibodies.
