NATO stands by Turkey, calls on Russia to stop the offensive in Idlib

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday urged Russia and Syria to halt their offensive in Idlib, saying the military alliance stands in full solidarity with its member Turkey, which has lost 33 soldiers. during an airstrike by Syrian government forces.

Syrian government forces, backed by Russian airstrikes, have launched an offensive to take control of the northwestern region of Idlib, the last remaining territory under Turkish-backed rebel control.

"Allies condemn the ongoing attacks by the Syrian regime and Russia in Idlib", Stoltenberg told reporters after an emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels, called at Turkey's request.

"I call on them to stop this offensive, to respect international law and to support the efforts of the UN for a peaceful solution", said Stoltenberg.
