Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that the West is playing with fire by considering the possibility of allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with Western missiles.
He warned the United States on Tuesday that World War III would not be limited to Europe, Reuters reports.
Ukraine launched attacks in Russia's western Kursk region on August 6, marking the largest foreign attack on Russia since World War II. President Vladimir Putin has said there will be a befitting response from Russia to the attack.
Lavrov, who served as Putin's foreign minister for more than 20 years, said the West was seeking to escalate the war in Ukraine and was "asking for trouble" by considering Ukraine's demands to loosen restrictions on the use of weapons supplied from abroad.
Since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, Putin has repeatedly warned of the risk of a much wider war involving the world's biggest nuclear powers, although he has said Russia does not want a conflict with the alliance. NATO led by the USA.
"Now we are confirming once again that playing with fire, and they are like little children playing with matches, is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who have been entrusted with nuclear weapons in one place or another other Western countries," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.
"The Americans unequivocally associate the talks about the Third World War as something that, God forbid, if it happens, will affect Europe exclusively," Lavrov added.
