German Minister: Europe should protect the market and convince the US to negotiate

John Wadephul

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has criticized US President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 50 percent tariff on European Union goods, saying such a decision would harm Europe, but also the US.

"I think that such tariffs do not benefit anyone, but would only lead to economic development in both markets suffering. So we still rely on negotiations, and we support the European Commission in protecting Europe and the European market, while working at the same time to convince America  for negotiations," he said at a press conference in Berlin on Friday.

Trump threatened during the day to impose a 50 percent tariff on all imports from the EU and a 25 percent tariff on Apple products if iPhones are not manufactured in America.

He said that this decision will come into effect from June 1 due to the stalled negotiations.
