Mexico took Ecuador to the United Nations' top court on Tuesday, accusing the country of violating international law by forcibly entering the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest the former Ecuadorian president, who had sought asylum in Mexico. .
The April 5 event, a few hours after Mexico granted asylum to the former president, Jorge Glas, has fueled tensions between the two countries, AP reports.
Leaders across Latin America have condemned the raid, calling it a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Ecuador has said Glas was wanted because of a corruption conviction, not for political reasons, and has argued that Mexico, by granting asylum to a convicted criminal, was itself in violation of the Vienna convention.
Among the measures Mexico is seeking is for the world court to order Ecuador to take "appropriate and immediate steps to ensure the full protection and security of diplomatic premises" and to prevent any further interference. She also wants Ecuador to allow Mexico to clarify its diplomatic locations and the homes of its diplomats in the country.
In the case filed on April 11, Mexico has also asked the court to suspend Ecuador from the United Nations.
