More than two million people have been evacuated from Pakistan's Punjab province as floods engulf the eastern region of the country, according to authorities.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chief Inam Haider Malik told reporters that another 150 people had been evacuated in Sindh province. He warned that the number could rise in the coming days, the BBC reports.

According to an update published on Friday by the international organization International Medical Corps, since the end of June, floods have caused the deaths of over 900 people across the country.

Climate change has worsened flooding in Pakistan, as torrential rains cause rivers to overflow. But critics also blame a lack of government investment in disaster mitigation, such as better warning systems and infrastructure.

Severe floods, which have become more frequent and intense due to climate change, are causing rivers to overflow their banks, inundating entire villages and towns.

However, critics point out that the situation has also worsened due to a lack of state investment in early warning systems and defensive infrastructure.
Torrential rains are expected to continue in the coming days, as authorities try to manage the humanitarian crisis that is deepening in many parts of the country.
