French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly warned European leaders that "there is a possibility that the US will betray Ukraine regarding territory, without clarity on security guarantees," German magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing a leaked note from a recent phone call between European leaders.
Spiegel said he had received a note in English summarizing the call, featuring what he claims are direct quotes from some of the participants, The Guardian reports.
The magazine claims that Macron spoke of the tense moment in the talks as "a big risk" for Zelensky, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also said in the call that the Ukrainian leader needed to be "very careful."
"They are playing games with you as well as us," Merz was reported as saying, which the magazine concluded was a reference to Steve Witkoff's mission to Moscow.
The magazine reported that other leaders also expressed their concerns, including the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, who reportedly said that "we should not leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys."
Even NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who is publicly very complimentary of Trump, reportedly said he agreed with Alexander "that we must protect Volodymyr."
The Guardian was not immediately able to confirm the report.
But Der Spiegel said it had spoken to "several" participants in the call who confirmed it took place, and two of them reportedly confirmed that the quotes were "accurately reproduced."
A spokesman for Zelensky declined to comment, as did Merz's office, while the Elysee Palace disputed the quotes attributed to Macron.
