French President Emmanuel Macron visited Beirut on Friday. The visit follows the appointment of Lebanon's new president, Joseph Aoun, who is considered close to the West. His appointment is seen as a major move for political stability in Lebanon, which has been without a president for two years, the Associated Press reported.
Macron will meet with the new president and other officials there.
The new president has nominated for prime minister the long-serving diplomat and lawyer Nawaf Salam, who currently serves as president of the International Court of Justice, a position he has held since the beginning of last year.
His bid for the prime minister position has raised hopes among the Lebanese people as he is expected to attract funds from the West and oil-rich Arab nations to help with the reconstruction process. Thousands of Lebanese have lost their savings after the banking sector collapsed as a result of the economic crisis.
It is not clear whether Macron will also meet with Salam.
