French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he favors imposing new sanctions on Russia in the coming days if Moscow fails to agree on a ceasefire in Ukraine. He cited financial services and oil and gas resources as possible targets.

"Our aim is to impose new sanctions on Russia in the coming days if Moscow refuses to implement the ceasefire," Macron said in an interview with French television station TF1.
The French president's comments follow those of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier on Tuesday, who said European allies would "tighten sanctions" on Russia if President Vladimir Putin did not agree to a ceasefire, Reuters reported.

Merzi also cited several sectors, including energy and financial markets, as possible targets. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Monday that the European Commission had been asked about proposing new sanctions in these respective sectors.

The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland said unanimously on Saturday, during a visit to Kiev, that Russia would be hit with a series of punitive measures if it did not respond to calls for a 30-day ceasefire.
