Volcano lava in Spain touches the ocean

Lava from a volcano in Spain's Canary Islands has reached the Atlantic Ocean overnight, warning of possible explosions and release of toxic gas.

In La Palmas, 589 buildings and 21 kilometers of roads have been destroyed so far, as a result of the expansion of the lava.

For several days, officials have been waiting to see when the volcano that erupted on September 19 will reach the ocean.

La Palma, which has about 85 inhabitants, is part of the Canary Islands, an archipelago near Northwest Africa.

The island is about 35 kilometers long and about 20 kilometers wide.
