The first country in the world to recognize Russian referendums on Ukrainian territory is North Korea, the BBC reported on Tuesday.
North Korean officials stated that the referendums were held "in full compliance with the UN Charter."
"The country supports the position of the Russian Government regarding the acceptance of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions into its composition," North Korea said. Belarus, a friendly country of Russia, has spoken in favor of the referendum, but which has not yet recognized Russian movements on Ukrainian lands.
Western countries have expressed their opposition to the recognition of the Russian referendums on Ukraine, on the grounds that they are illegitimate and that they have not respected the UN Charter.
The President of the USA, Joe Biden, has said that America only knows the current territory of Ukraine, and "never that of the referendums".
On Tuesday, the Council of the Russian Federation unanimously recognized the referendums, after a vote in the State Duma. Now the decree of President Vladimir Putin is expected.
