Nepalese police announced on Thursday that 270 bodies have been recovered so far from areas affected by Wednesday's floods on the Nepal-Tibet border.
Rescue teams are continuing the search for survivors, which has been made difficult by the destruction of many homes, flooded roads and bridges swept away by mud and water.
Rescue efforts have been further hampered by heavy rain and the mountainous terrain. In Tibet, at least 558 people are missing, with three confirmed dead.
Hundreds of foreign nationals are missing on both sides of the border. Nepalese authorities said the number of tourists missing comes from 30 different countries.
A study by the US Geological Survey says that "glacial collapse and debris flow" caused the flooding, and there are fears that debris in rivers could cause a second flood.
