Israel's security cabinet has ratified the agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the exchange of dozens of hostages held by Hamas as well as Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The agreement will now go to the government cabinet for final approval so that the agreement can be implemented from Sunday and the release of hostages and prisoners can begin.
In the first phase of the deal, which will last 42 days, Hamas has agreed to release 33 hostages, including female soldiers, while Israel will release 50 Palestinian prisoners for every female Israeli soldier released, and 30 for the other female hostages, the Guardian reported.
The deal also includes the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes and free movement through the Gaza Strip, which Israel has divided with a military corridor. Humanitarian aid will be increased.
In the second phase, the live hostages will be sent home and some Palestinian prisoners will be released. Israel will withdraw completely from the territory.
The third phase will include the exchange of bodies of hostages and dead Hamas members, as well as a reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that if the deal passes, the ceasefire will begin on Sunday with the release of the first hostages.
Israel continued its attacks on Thursday after the deal was announced by mediators. Palestinian authorities said at least 86 people had been killed.
The 15-month-long war has killed more than 46 Palestinians and destroyed much of Gaza's infrastructure. The International Court of Justice is looking into claims that Israel has committed genocide.
About 1,200 people in Israel were killed and 250 taken hostage in the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war. 100 hostages were released in exchange for 240 women and children held in Israeli prisons, as part of a deal in November 2023 that collapsed after a week.
