The Israeli army on Monday ordered the evacuation of Gaza's second-largest city, Khan Younis, where it had carried out a massive operation earlier in the war, leaving much of the area in ruins.

Israel has expanded its offensive in Gaza, saying it is an attempt to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages taken in the October 7, 2023 attack.

But Hamas has said it will release them only in exchange for a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel plans to "take control of all of Gaza" and create a new system for distributing aid that bypasses Hamas.

He has also said that Israel will encourage what he refers to as the voluntary emigration of a large portion of Gaza's population to other countries.
