Ivanov refuses to sign the agreement on Macedonia's new name

The President of Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, has decided not to sign the Law on the ratification of the Agreement on the name with Greece.

"In carrying out the function of the President of the Republic of Macedonia, I always act responsibly and fulfill my rights and obligations within the framework of the Constitution, laws and interests of the Republic of Macedonia", it is said, among other things, in the written announcement of the presidency.

In the announcement of the Presidency, there are 5 reasons why President Ivanov refuses to sign the ratification of the Law on the Agreement with Greece, reports Alsat M.

1. I do not have the mandate to sign the decree for the promulgation of the Law for the ratification of this Agreement. One of the pillars of my policy from the 2014 program is that I do not accept the amendment of the Constitution in order to change the constitutional name.

2. The agreement goes beyond the framework of resolutions 817 (1993) and 845 (1993) of the Security Council of the United Nations.

3. The agreement has no constitutional basis and is not ratified in compliance with the Constitution.

4. The Law on ratification of the Agreement is not in compliance with Article 51, Article 118 and Article 119 of the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia.

5. The agreement puts Macedonia in a state of subjugation and dependence on other states, specifically Greece.

On June 17, the Prime Minister of Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, and his Greek counterpart, Alexis Tsipras, signed the Agreement to change the name of Macedonia to the Republic of Macedonia.
