Iran's Revolutionary Guard confirmed Soleimani's killing on Tuesday, according to Mizan, the country's official news agency.
He was one of two senior security officials that Israel said on Tuesday it killed in overnight strikes, dealing a major blow to Iran's leadership.
Iranian state media has yet to confirm the death of Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who was considered one of the most powerful figures in the country.
Both men were key to Iran's violent crackdown on protests in January.
Soleimani had also been sanctioned by the US, the European Union and other countries for his role in helping to suppress dissent for years through the Basij, an all-volunteer militia.
