A senior Hamas official has told the BBC that the group will not take part in talks on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release agreement, which resume in Doha on Thursday.

Hamas wanted a roadmap for implementing the agreement and "will not engage in negotiations for the sake of negotiations in order to provide a shield for Israel to continue its war," he said.

The official said the roadmap should be based on the proposed agreement presented by US President Joe Biden in late May, and accused Israel of adding "new conditions".

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, denied that such a thing was done and said that Hamas was the one who demanded changes.

The talks were suspended after the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran.

The US hopes a deal could stop Iran from retaliating against Israel for Haniyeh's killing.
