Greece, the plane trying to put out the fire crashes into the ground

A plane trying to extinguish a fire in Greece has crashed after thousands of people have fled Rhodes and Corfu amid the flames that are destroying the country, writes the Independent.

The Greek fire brigade has confirmed that the accident happened over the town of Karystos on the island of Evia near Athens, where there was a fire. The spokesperson said that they are investigating if there were any victims.

The accident comes after 20 people were forced to leave their homes and hotels in Rhodes over the weekend after a fire that started a week ago spread, while more than 2 holidaymakers were flown home on Monday and more flights are expected later today.

After the fire in Rhodes prompted the "biggest evacuation" in Greek history, civil defense authorities warned of extreme fire danger on the island of Crete.

Greece has experienced very high temperatures in recent weeks and they are expected to increase until Wednesday, when it is expected to exceed 44 degrees Celsius in some areas.
