Germany risks being drawn into an armed conflict with Russia as Moscow intensifies what German authorities call a "shadow war" against European democracies, Reuters reports.
The warning was made by the head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, Martin Jaeger, during a public session in parliament, where intelligence service leaders reported on security threats.
Jaeger said that the confrontation with Russia has entered a new and more dangerous phase. According to him, Germany could be involved in an armed conflict with Russia and cited the attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport as an example.
German authorities have repeatedly warned that Russia is waging a hybrid campaign, including drone and cyber attacks. Berlin has accused Moscow of being behind an attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport in August.
Russia has repeatedly denied accusations that it intends to attack NATO member countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Moscow does not threaten anyone and has no intention of attacking any country, whether in 2029, 2030 or 2050. However, he added that in the event of an aggression against Russia, his country would respond.
