The German Bundestag passed a new family law that provides relief to parents with lower incomes. The aim is to protect families who earn less from poverty.
The draft law was presented to the parliament by the Minister of Labour, Hubertus Heil, together with the Minister of the Family, Franziska Giffey. Families, where the income of the parents covers the minimum personal need, but not that of the children, will receive a new subsidy for the latter.
As of July 1, the subsidy will increase from the current 170 euros to 185 euros. Heil clarified that the services will primarily benefit mothers and fathers in single-parent families.
The law provides greater subsidies for those with low incomes, single-parent families and families that depend on assistance, tch reports.
In this way, it is foreseen that the subsidy for children will increase by 15 euros per month. For the next school year, children in need will receive free school meals and a monthly ticket for school buses.
For school materials, 150 euros will be given instead of 100 euros. A total of four million children will benefit from the addition of services. For the "Strong Family Law", the government will spend 1,3 billion euros in the next legislature. According to the opposition, the law is fair, but it does not go far enough.
