German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday that NATO should not play a role in securing the Strait of Hormuz.
His statement came shortly after US President Donald Trump warned the North Atlantic alliance that it would face a "very bad" future if it failed to help.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Wadephul said Germany does not see NATO "taking responsibility" for the Strait of Hormuz.
Wadephul added that Germany is in favor of imposing sanctions on "those responsible" for blocking the key shipping passage.
