The French government has announced that it will continue the procedures for the Migration Law even though this decision has been declared illegal. Many points of the law have been rejected by the Constitutional Council of France. According to the Council, these points of the article were added due to great pressure from right-wing groups.
With this law, foreigners can be deported with criminal penalties. Even those who came to France before they turned 13 or those who have lived in France for more than 20 years can be deported if they are imprisoned or declared a major threat to public order.
The migration law was passed at a time when France is faced with large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers. The application for asylum has increased by 8.6 percent or 142 thousand per year.
Ahead of European Parliament elections and without a majority in the National Assembly, President Emmanuel Macron is facing heavy pressure from the far right and is heavily dependent on non-coalition parties to pass laws.
