FBI: DNA on gun used to kill Charlie Kirk matches arrested suspect

FBI Director Kash Patel said Monday that DNA on a towel wrapped around the gun allegedly used to kill conservative activist Charlie Kirk has matched the murder suspect, who is already in custody. 

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested in the death of a right-wing influencer at a Utah university event on Wednesday. A rifle was found near the scene of the shooting and a screwdriver was found on the roof from where the gun was fired.

"I can report today that DNA traces from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and DNA on the screwdriver have matched the suspect in custody," Patel told Fox and Friends.

A formal indictment is expected this week. The motive has not yet been determined.

According to a Utah County Sheriff's Office inmate registration form obtained by the BBC, Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and use of a heavy firearm.

Kirk became nationally known as a polarizing figure in the US after helping to found Turning Point USA, a right-wing political youth group, and used his online audience to rally support for highly controversial points. 

The father of two was recently visiting several university campuses across the US to debate with college students.
