The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has announced that he has formed the "America Party".
The decision to launch this party was made a day after he asked his followers on X whether he should form a new party for the American political scene.
"By a ratio of 2 to 1, you want a new party and you must have it. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," he wrote.
This party, according to Musk, will challenge both Republicans and Democrats. As of Saturday morning, over 65% of the approximately 1.25 million participants voted "yes" to its formation.
Musk's decision came after US President Donald Trump signed a bill Friday that would provide major tax cuts that the Tesla founder has strongly opposed. Musk even threatened to fund political opponents for any member of Congress who voted for the bill. He said he would form the "America Party" if the bill passed. The House of Representatives passed the bill 218-214. Only two Republicans joined Democrats in trying to block it. In the Senate, the vote was tied 50-50, with Vice President JD Vance voting in favor. Trump signed it into law on Friday.

Musk himself has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump's re-election campaign. He also briefly led the Trump administration's newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to cut costs, but the pair later clashed.
Earlier in the day, The Guardian, in an analysis, pointed out that Musk's party will be able to focus on several important positions in the Senate and House of Representatives, in order to ensure influence on important decisions.
