Ecuadorian drug trafficker extradited to the US

Adolfo Macias Villama

Ecuador has extradited to the United States (US) the leader of the Ecuadorian drug gang, Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as "Fito".

He faces charges of drug and weapons trafficking.

Villamar was arrested in June, more than a year after escaping from a maximum-security prison where he was serving a 34-year sentence for a series of crimes, the BBC reports.

He will appear in a US federal court on Monday, where he is expected to plead guilty to drug and weapons trafficking charges.

Macías was the leader of the Los Choneros gang, which is linked to powerful criminal organizations from Mexico and the Balkans. He is also suspected of ordering the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023.
