An incident in which two women locked a crying baby in an airplane toilet has sparked an online debate in China about how to manage children in public spaces.
The incident went viral on the Chinese internet after one of the two women, Gou Tingting, posted a video of herself holding the little girl inside the toilet cubicle, the BBC reports.
In her post, she presented herself as trying to help others on board, but she was immediately met with backlash.
The airline later said the girl's grandmother had given permission to the two women to "educate" the baby.
The incident occurred on August 24, on a Juneyao Airlines flight from the southwestern city of Guiyang to Shanghai.
The little girl, who was traveling with her grandmother, started crying during the flight.
The airline said in a statement two days after the incident that the girl's grandmother had agreed to two women taking the girl to the bathroom.
A video posted by Gou on Chinese social media reportedly shows the other woman telling the girl she could only leave the toilet if she stopped crying.
Local media reports say she was a year old, although the airline has not released that detail.
Soon after she posted the video, backlash was swift, with many criticizing Gou for being insensitive and "bullying" the child.
Responding to the criticism, Gou explained that some passengers had moved to the back of the plane to escape the noise, while others had put papers in their ears.
