Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government, saying he has "lost confidence" in his leadership.

In a letter to the prime minister, which Streeting published online, he says that "where we need vision, we have a gap. Where we need direction, we have a deviation."

Streeting also told Starmer that "it is now clear that you will not take the Labour Party to the next general election" and added that what comes next should be "a battle of ideas...".

Starmer is fighting to save his position after four ministers resigned and dozens of Labour MPs called on him to resign following last week's heavy election defeats.

Streeting's supporters said on Wednesday that they expect him to challenge the British prime minister for the leadership of the Labour Party as early as Thursday.
