With just days to go before a planned protest, a court in Moscow sentenced Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny to 20 days in jail for calling for participation in "unauthorized" rallies.
Navalny, who is the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation and also the head of the Russian opposition party "Progres", was arrested last week.
In his statement before the judge, the Russian dissident said his arrest was a "gift" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"We don't do anything illegal," he added.
Navalny planned to hold a rally in St. Petersburg on October 7, on Putin's 65th birthday.
