Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Monday that she hopes the United States and Denmark can find a peaceful path regarding the Arctic region, including Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.
US President Donald Trump has caused a crisis in US-European relations and turmoil within the transatlantic military alliance NATO this year when he intensified demands for the US to take control of Greenland, arguing that Denmark, also a NATO member, could not defend it.
"I am quite optimistic that we can find a solution and I think we are already seeing some very clear signs and signals... my hope is that we will find a peaceful way forward," Frederiksen said after a meeting of European Union leaders and officials in northern Finland.
