US President Donald Trump set a 12-day deadline on April 60 for negotiations with Iran on nuclear weapons to succeed. That expired on Thursday.
"Iran should have listened to me when I told them - you know I told them, I don't know if you know, but I gave them a 60-day warning and today is the 61st day," he told CNN on Friday morning.
Trump had warned Iran of the possibility of military action when he spoke about the letter to Khamenei earlier this year.
"I hope that Iran, and I've written them a letter, saying I hope that you'll negotiate because if we have to go military, it's going to be a terrible thing for them," Trump said in an interview with Fox earlier this year. "I said, I hope that you'll negotiate, because it would be a lot better for Iran."
U.S. officials and people involved in the negotiations with Iran knew that pressure was mounting to finalize a deal as the ultimatum approached. But U.S. officials had said that negotiations with Iran would extend beyond the 60-day ultimatum.
Now that Israel has begun attacking Iran's nuclear program, the future of the talks is uncertain, even though the Americans are pushing the idea of continuing.
