Tsipras comments on the perspective of the Balkans towards the EU

The Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, once again described the Agreement on the name as historic, but emphasized the need for its strict implementation.

After the meeting with his Serbian, Romanian and Bulgarian colleagues, Tsipras emphasized that the Balkan countries have a new Euro-Atlantic perspective, but added that the integration process requires vision and bold steps.

"This year we have the historic Prespa Agreement, the achievement of which a year ago was unimaginable. But it is already a fact and forms the basis for solving a very important issue, giving a new perspective to the entire region", said the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras.

Despite the decision of the European Council, Tsipras recalled that the finalization of the Agreement on oil is a necessary condition for the opening of negotiations in June next year.

"We have decided to start talks in the summer of 2019 for Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, provided that the issue of the name of this country is resolved positively. It is important to emphasize that positive tones are needed", Tsipras said.

The implementation of the Name Agreement is expected to be discussed next week at the meeting between Prime Ministers Tsipras and Zaev in London within the framework of the EU-Western Balkans Summit./Alsat
