The twins who were born just minutes apart – but with different fathers

The story of Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne defies all expectations about the bond between twins. Born within minutes of each other to the same mother, they discovered decades later that they did not share the same father, due to an extremely rare biological phenomenon. This shocking discovery changed the way they saw themselves and their family, but failed to break the strong bond that has always united them.

Twins Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne have always had a special bond between them.

But when Lavinia clicked on an email with the results of a home DNA test in September 2022, she was filled with a sense of dread.

"Maybe subconsciously I knew," she says.

Her test results revealed something shocking: non-identical twins Lavinia and Michelle do not have the same father.

They developed together in the same womb and were born to the same mother within minutes of each other - but they are half-sisters, with different fathers.

Michelle and Lavinia, 49, exist thanks to an extremely rare biological process called heteropaternal superfertilization. For this to happen, a woman must produce more than one egg during the same cycle, those eggs must be successfully fertilized by sperm from different men, and the resulting embryos must survive pregnancy.

Only about 20 cases have been identified worldwide. After months of researching their story for the BBC Radio 4 series, The Gift, the journalist has discovered that Lavinia and Michelle are the only set of twins with different fathers ever documented in the UK.
For Lavinia, this discovery was devastating. She and Michelle had had a difficult childhood, often moving from one home to another and from one caregiver to another. The only constant these non-identical twins had was each other.

"She was the only thing that belonged to me, the only thing I was sure of, the only thing I had no doubts about," Lavinia says. "And then it turned out that wasn't the case."

"Me and her against the world"

But when Lavinia called her twin sister to tell her the news, Michelle reacted differently.

"I wasn't surprised," Michelle says. "I still find it incredible that this could happen - it's very strange, very unusual, extremely rare - but it makes sense."

Michelle and Lavinia's mother was a vulnerable 19-year-old girl when she gave birth to them in Nottingham in 1976.

"She had suffered abuse from her stepfather," Michelle says. "My mother had been in foster care and orphanages throughout her childhood."

Whenever the twins asked who their father was, their mother always said he was a person named James. "He wasn't a part of our lives," Michelle continues.

Their mother was also absent for most of their lives. When they were five, she won a place to study at university in London and left the children in Nottingham with her best friend's mother, whom the twins called "grandma."

"Grandma was strict - not very emotional, not very affectionate. The only stable thing I had was Michelle," says Lavinia.

As long as she had her twin, Michelle says she felt safe.

“It was her and me against the world.”

At the age of 10, the girls joined their mother in London. But within a few years, Lavinia and Michelle were sent away again, to live with one of the foster families where their mother had previously lived. They could not understand why their mother wanted to keep her distance from them.
"Physically and emotionally, she was always inaccessible to us," says Lavinia.
After being absent for most of their childhood, James returned to their lives when the twins were in their mid-teens. Lavinia managed to find him - and while she thought she saw a resemblance, Michelle was never sure he was her father. Deep down, there were lingering doubts.

By late 2021, their mother was suffering from early-onset dementia and was no longer able to answer their questions. Michelle saw a photo of James and became even more convinced that he could not be her father.

"I just thought: you don't look like me at all," Michelle says. "So I bought myself a test."

If you take a DNA test, you discover truths not only about yourself, but also about your family. But Michelle didn't think about how her results could affect Lavinia when she sent the sample for analysis. The results arrived on February 14, 2022 – the same day that Michelle and Lavinia's mother passed away.

Getting to know fathers

James's surname did not appear on Michelle's paternal line - he was not her father.

After weeks of research, Michelle discovered that her father was Alex, the brother of a woman who had been friends with their mother. Michelle contacted some of Alex's family, who warned her that he had struggled for years with alcoholism and drug addiction, and that he was living on the streets.

Michelle and Lavinia met a woman named Olivine, who Michelle believed was her first cousin on her father's side. Michelle immediately felt a connection with her.

"I just knew it was my blood," she says. But Lavinia didn't feel the same. And when Olivine pulled out pictures of her family, Lavinia didn't see herself in their faces.

Lavinia decided to take a DNA test herself. She didn't expect to get a different result than Michelle, but she needed to do something about her growing feelings of insecurity that Alex's family wasn't hers.

"I just wanted confirmation," she says.

When she opened the results and saw the shocking truth that her twin was actually her half-sister, Lavinia was devastated - and furious.

"I was angry with Michelle for putting me through this, because I just didn't want this reality."

And there were more revelations to come. When Lavinia carefully examined her results, she saw that James was not her father either.

Lavinia had no interest in finding out who her father was, but Michelle was determined to find answers. By analyzing her twin's results, Michelle found Arthur, Lavinia's biological father. The twins went to meet him at his home in West London.

“He was a little nervous, but he has a very lively character - like me,” says Lavinia. At the end of their meeting, she kissed Arthur on the cheek.
"I just felt drawn to do this."

Since then, Lavinia and Arthur have been very close, meeting several times a month, often with Michelle.

"I feel like I've found a place where I belong, and that place is with my father," says Lavinia. He has also told Michelle that she can call him "Dad" too.

At a later meeting, the twins asked Arthur what he knew about how they were born.

"He said, 'Your mother knocked on my door. She was very upset. She was crying,'" Michelle says. "She went to him because she wasn't sure and she was in shock."
Michelle and Lavinia's mother is no longer here to tell exactly what happened, but Arthur says she turned to him in a moment of need.

Michelle also managed to meet her biological father, Alex, through some new family members she had discovered.

"It was clear he was under the influence of drugs," says Michelle.
The similarity between them was undeniable.

"He's mine, I'm his, but I didn't feel like he was someone I wanted to have as part of my future," she says.
"I just needed to know."

The twins will never know if their mother suspected they had different fathers.

"This must have driven him crazy," says Lavinia. "He must have seen something, felt something."
"I think deep down in her mind, Mom knew, but she was in a huge denial," Michelle says.

As non-identical twins, Lavinia and Michelle have always been aware of their differences. The truths revealed by their DNA made those differences seem even more pronounced at first.

But they will always share a unique bond.

"We are miracles," says Lavinia. "We will always have a closeness that cannot be broken."
"She's my twin sister," Michelle asserts. "Nothing changes that."
