The German Interior Ministry announced today that the number of asylum requests has fallen by 14 percent compared to 2015 and 2016, when the migrant crisis erupted.
Last year, 111,094 requests for asylum were submitted, or 18.534 or 14.3 percent more than in 2018, AP reports.
The largest number of asylum applications were submitted by migrants from Syria - about 26.453 applications, followed by citizens of Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan.
A total of 6.771 requests were submitted only in December last year, reports KP.
Minister Horst Zehofer said that for the third year in a row, the number of applications was down, indicating that the many measures taken against uncontrolled immigration had proved effective, but that pressure on the external borders of the EU and Germany would remain high.
