The eight NATO member countries that Trump has threatened with tariffs starting February 1 issued a joint statement on Sunday in reaction to the decision.

Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom will face 10% tariffs on exports to the US from February, which will increase to 25% in June.

But in the letter, the countries emphasize that they "stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland."

"We are ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, to which we firmly adhere," the letter states.

All eight countries are members of NATO and underline that they are "committed to strengthening security in the Arctic as a common transatlantic interest."

To this end, they say that the recent Danish exercise in Greenland, called "Arctic Endurance" - was a reflection of this and "poses no threat to anyone".

The US president's bid to take control of Greenland has caused tensions among members of the world's largest military alliance, NATO. Most of them are European countries, as well as Canada, have come out in defense of the sovereignty of Denmark, which owns Greenland.
