Over 70 killed by Israeli attack on a school building in Gaza

Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a school building housing displaced Palestinians in Gaza City has killed more than 70 people, a hospital director told the BBC on Saturday.

Fadl Naeem, head of al-Ahli hospital where many of the victims were taken, said it was difficult to identify the bodies due to disfigurement from the attack.

Naeem said that the situation was "catastrophic" and doctors were unable to treat the seriously injured.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said the al-Taba'een school "served as an active Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility" with around 20 "militants" operating there. Hamas denies this.

Israel has attacked several such shelters in Gaza in recent weeks.
