Iran does not want regional escalation, but will "punish" Israel

Iran does not want to escalate regional tensions, but believes it must punish Israel to prevent instability, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

"Iran wants to restore stability in the region, but this can only be achieved by punishing the aggressor and curbing the adventures of the Zionist regime (Israel)", said Nasser Kanaani, adding that action from Tehran is inevitable.

Kanaani has called on the United States of America to stop supporting Israel, saying that the international community has failed to maintain stability in the region and that it should support the "punishment of the aggressor", reports Reuters.

The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, on Monday repeated the group's threat that Israel "will take the punishment at the right time."
